LOS ALAMITOS, Calif., 16 August 2021 – Voting for IEEE Computer Society (IEEE CS) approved slate of candidates for president-elect, first and second vice presidents, and Board of Governors members, begins today Monday, 16 August 2021 and will end on Monday, 20 September 2021.

Officers are elected to one-year terms and Board members to three-year terms, each beginning 1 January 2022. Candidate bios and position statements will be published in the September issue of Computer magazine, which is distributed to all IEEE CS members.
Candidates for president-elect:
Nita Patel and Dimitrios Serpanos will be on the ballot for 2022 president-elect and 2023 president. The president serves as the chief elected officer of the IEEE CS, representing the entire membership. Under the direction of the Board of Governors, the president provides direction for IEEE CS officers and Society programs and is responsible for the general supervision of the Society. The president serves one year as president-elect, one year as president, and one year as past president.
Nita Patel, P.E., is Senior Director, Engineering Lead Design Center – Farmington at Otis leading a critical part of the global engineering development, providing a wide range of new product capabilities in connected, smart, IoT-based platforms. Patel is a director on the IEEE Foundation and is active with multiple Computer Society committees, the IEEE Industry Engagement Committee, several IEEE WIE Committees, and the IEEE New Hampshire executive committee. Nita has served as 1st Vice President Computer Society, served a three-year term on the Computer Society Board of Governors, founded and led the first five years of the IEEE Women in Engineering International Leadership Conference, served as Women in Engineering International Chair for which she received the 2014 Larry K Wilson Transnational Award for distinguished contributions to IEEE global activities.
Dimitrios Serpanos is Professor of ECE, University of Patras, and President of the Computer Technology Institute, Greece. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from Princeton University (1990) and an Engineering Diploma in Computer Engineering and Informatics, University of Patras (1985). He served as a member of the IEEE CS Board of Governors (2017-2020) and is its representative on CEDA’s BoG. He served as IEEE CS Secretary (2020), Treasurer (2019), and on several committees (ExCom, FinCom, C&B, NomCom, PlanCom). His research focuses on embedded and industrial control systems architecture and cybersecurity. His research has been well funded by the European Commission, the Greek Government, and the private sector in Europe and the USA. He is an IEEE Senior Member and member of ACM, NYAS, and AAAS.

Candidates for first and second vice presidents:
Candidates for 2022 first vice president are David Lomet and Riccardo Mariani
David Lomet founded Microsoft’s Database Research Group in 1995 and managed it for 22 years. He retired in 2020. Earlier, he worked at DEC’s Cambridge Research Lab, IBM Research Yorktown, and Wang Institute of Graduate Studies. His PhD in computer science is from the University of Pennsylvania. David is currently Treasurer, has been on the CS Board of Governors, and served as First Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer (4 years). He received the 2018 Spirit of the Computer Society and 2021 T&C Distinguished Service Awards for his CS governance activities.
Riccardo Mariani is the Vice President of Industry Safety at NVIDIA and an IEEE Senior Member. He served as 2019 VP for Standardization and First VP for 2020 and 2021, chairing the CS Standards Activities Board. He is active in IEEE Standards Association (SA) as well, within the Corporate Advisory Group. He is chairing the Functional Safety Standards Committee (FSSC) of the CS and co-chairing the IEEE CS STC on “Reliable, Safe, Secure and Time Deterministic Intelligent Systems”. He is also the chair of the IEEE CS D&I subcommittee on Discriminatory Language in Computing (DLC).
Candidates for 2022 second vice president candidates are David Ebert and Ramalatha Marimuthu
David Ebert is an Associate Vice President for Research and Partnerships, the Gallogly Chair Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Director of the Data Institute for Societal Challenges at the University of Oklahoma. He is an IEEE Fellow, an adjunct Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University and Director of the Visual Analytics for Command Control and Interoperability Center, a U.S. DHS Emeritus Center of Excellence.
Ramalatha Marimuthu, PhD in Electrical Engineering, retired after 34 years in teaching, specializes in Assistive Technology. She serves on the Board of Studies of universities and has introduced novelties in the curriculum and teaching introducing animation and gaming, industry electives, and project-based service learning. She chaired the IEEE Women in Engineering Committee in 2011 and 2012. Currently, she serves as the Secretary of IEEE Computer Society and is on the Board of Governors.
The first and second vice presidents serve as franchised members of the Executive Committee, Board of Governors, and Planning Committee. The vice presidents may execute a portfolio as assigned by the president, and provide counsel and assistance to the president and other volunteer leaders. In the event that the president and president-elect cannot serve, the line of succession falls to the first vice president, then to the second vice president.

The Board of Governors is responsible for providing policy-level guidance to all organizational entities within the Computer Society. Members may vote for up to six for the Board of Governors position. (Listed alphabetically)

Voting Eligibility
All professional and graduate student IEEE CS members on record as of 14 June 2021 are eligible to vote in this year’s IEEE CS election. (Undergraduate student members do not hold voting rights.) Ballots must be returned no later than 12:00 p.m. EDT USA/16:00 UTC on Monday, 20 September 2021. Results will be announced in Computer’s December issue and online.
Only IEEE CS members without an email address in their member record, or those who have opted out of IEEE email communications, will receive a paper ballot package. Those who receive paper ballots should return them by mail using the business reply envelope provided, or to IEEE Technical Activities, Attn: SGA, 445 Hoes Lane, PO Box 1331, Piscataway, NJ 08855-1331, USA.
All eligible voters will receive an email message from sender ieee-computervote@ieee.org with voting instructions to access their online ballot information and voting link. IEEE Account username/password is required to access the online ballot.
