Episode 14 – Danqi Chen Interview

ICS Ep 14“I remember in the IOI dorm (International Olympiad in Informatics) in Egypt, I had only one roommate–because there were very very few female participants.”
“I really like the beauty of algorithms.”

– Danqi Chen, Professor at Princeton University.

The IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics) is one of the premier world science Olympiads for high schoolers. It features algorithmics+coding. Unfortunately — among the 5000+ contestants in about 25 years of Olympiads from 1989-2014, only around 2.6% of contestants were female.

Today’s amazing guest Danqi Chen is one of the few, over the years, women Gold Medal Winners at the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). She also describes her experience being a student in the famous Yao Class (or Special Pilot CS Class) in Tsinghua University in China. And a lot more about her upbringing in China, and her journey to research in Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing (NLP)!
